Things to know
- Two trains - the Chepe Regional runs the whole line between Chihuahua and Los Mochis, stopping at many small stations. The Chepe Express, a tourist train with a dining car and a bar, runs only between Los Mochis and Creel. Neither runs every day, so check the timetable.
- A long day - the full trip takes most of a day, and trains can run late. Many travellers stop for a night or two at Creel, Divisadero or Bahuichivo to see the canyons, and buy tickets for each part.
- Time zones - Chihuahua and Sinaloa keep different time, so clocks change by an hour near the state line, below Témoris. Timetables give local times.
- Travel advice - parts of the Sierra Tarahumara have had security problems. Check your government's current travel advice for Chihuahua and Sinaloa before you go.
- Altitude and weather - the line climbs to about 2,450 m. Nights in Creel and Divisadero are cold, with frost and sometimes snow in winter, while Los Mochis is hot.
- Patchy signal - there is little mobile coverage in the canyon country between Creel and El Fuerte.
