Things to know

  • Out and back in a day - the train leaves Sault Ste. Marie in the morning, stops in the canyon for about an hour and a half, and comes back the same way, arriving in the early evening. Use ⇄ to switch the commentary to the return trip.
  • Season - the train runs from late summer to mid-October; autumn colours, usually from mid-September, are the busiest time and sell out early. The 2026 season began in August after a break, so check the operator's dates before you plan.
  • In the canyon - the train stops in the canyon park, which has no road access. Trails lead to Black Beaver and Bridal Veil falls and up the stairs of the Lookout Trail; listen for the whistle that calls passengers back.
  • Food - bring your own or buy on board; tickets don't include meals except in the premium car.
  • No signal - there is no mobile coverage for most of the line and in the canyon.

GPS may not be available everywhere. Tunnels, deep canyons and some rail cars can block the signal. The app estimates where the train is for a few minutes from its last speed, but cards may come late until the signal returns.
